To help lost parents like me, I am writing this blog to help introduce few children’s books and famous authors to whom I owe key credit of my kids being avid readers. Following are books starting for each age group, where I have tried providing an alternative cheaper option where applicable:
- 6 month up to 2 years old
- 2-4 years old
- 4-6 years
If I had to pick my favourite authors from the above list or from kids’ perspective, it will be Eric Carle and Julia Donaldson. I would recommend buying her book set once you start seeing your kids engaged with her Monkey Puzzle or The Gruffalo – The Julia Donaldson Book Collection. Their books have a very unique writing style that engages young minds while picking up on the lifecycle of butterfly (The very hungry caterpillar) at such a young age and vocabulary to be able to express themselves.
Above lists all the books that I have read to my kids except the cloth books given the lost window and savored every moment of their listening, giggles and constant re-reading requests while I had been trying to put them to sleep. If I had one pro-tip as a parent, try saying YES as often as you can to their “one more book mumma (daddy) please” requests. Nostalgia hits sometimes when they no longer depend on you for reading and other chores and how you miss the closeness, them sitting on your lap. I will be dishonest if I say I always said yes, I did say No a lot because of the schedule we super-parents try to manage alongside our jobs and other commitments but do give it your best, which may vary from day to day.
I would love to hear your reading experiences or recommendations that can be added to the above list to help other young parents start on this beautiful journey of raising readers.
Here’s a saying by Mark Twain which has always stayed with me and hopefully stays with you too:
“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.”
